New Zealand to Require Asbestos Testing for All Sand-Containing Toys
From February 2027, any toy or consumer product that includes sand must be tested for asbestos before it can be sold in New Zealand.
Starting 1 February 2027, the Commerce Commission and New Zealand Customs will require that all toys and consumer goods containing accessible sand undergo asbestos testing before entering the market. The measure responds to a 2025 discovery of asbestos in Kmart coloured sand products, which led to a recall of 23 products affecting over 45,000 items. Grant McIntosh, the commission's principal compliance adviser, said the policy is intended to safeguard children under 14 from hidden asbestos exposure.
The notice applies to sand that can be reached during normal use, including decorative and craft items. Because asbestos cannot be identified visually, the testing requirement aims to prevent unsafe products from reaching homes. Buyers are advised to verify whether any sand-related items they own have been recalled and to follow recall instructions promptly.
Why it matters
Ensuring sand toys are asbestos-free protects children's health and prevents hazardous products from reaching New Zealand homes.
