Newport Beach jeweler sentenced to five years for $1.7 million fraud scheme

In a Santa Ana courtroom, Newport Beach jeweler Nelson Holdo was sentenced to five years in state prison after pleading guilty to three felony theft counts that allegedly cost his clients more than $1.7 million in Rolex watches, diamonds and other pieces. The plea agreement dismissed about three dozen other counts, and the California Department of Justice declined to comment on the terms. Holdo, who previously operated stores in San Marino and later launched businesses such as LA Gems Private Jewelers and Brivetti, was described by victims as having cultivated personal relationships to facilitate the fraud.
Loretta Savery, a longtime client, testified that Holdo repeatedly offered excuses for delayed deliveries and ultimately failed to refund her $5,000 payment for ruby earrings. The judge ordered Holdo to repay the full sum claimed by prosecutors. Holdo remained silent at sentencing, and his public defender also declined to speak.
