Newport mother dies after garden fire explosion involving paint canister

Katie Louise Marshall, a 32-year-old mother from Newport, died two months after a paint-filled bin bag exploded in a garden fire, causing severe burns.

During a garden fire on June 26, Katie Louise Marshall put a black bin bag on the flames; the bag held a paint cannister that exploded, inflicting burns on about 50% of her body. She was first taken to Grange University Hospital, transferred to the specialist burns unit at Morriston Hospital in Swansea, and subsequently moved to Bristol Royal Infirmary when she developed significant respiratory failure. Marshall died on September 24, roughly two months after the incident.

Social media tributes described her as kind and beautiful, and her family released pink balloons and set off pink fireworks on September 25 as a memorial. Senior Coroner Caroline Saunders announced that the inquest will reconvene on June 9, 2027.
