NextEra Secures $13 Billion Natural-Gas Plant Deal for Fayette County
NextEra Energy Resources will build the East Riverside Energy Center, a 4.3-GW natural-gas complex in Luzerne Township, funded largely by Japanese investment.
Under a U.S.-Japan trade agreement, NextEra Energy Resources has been selected to develop a $17 billion natural-gas generation hub in southwestern Pennsylvania, with $13 billion earmarked for the East Riverside Energy Center in Fayette County. The plant will consist of three combined-cycle blocks, each about 1,250 MW, and will be built on reclaimed surface-mined coal property along the Monongahela River. Phase-by-phase commercial operation is targeted for 2030, 2031 and 2032, and the facility will feed the PJM Interconnection grid.
Local officials highlighted the site's suitability, noting its isolation and the absence of alternative redevelopment options. The project promises roughly 2,000 construction jobs and about 100 permanent roles, while a special-purpose vehicle backed by the U.S. and Japanese governments will own the site.
Why it matters
The plant will add significant power capacity to a region facing reliability shortfalls and bring major investment to a historically impoverished county.
