NFL and Players Union Test New Fine System with Refunds and Point Penalties

At a meeting in Atlanta, NFL owners and the NFL Players Association agreed to a trial fine structure for the 2026 season that emphasizes five high-risk tackles and hits. Each infraction adds a point, and accumulating three points results in a one-game ban. A player cited once for any of the five targeted violations will get back half of the fine, while a single offense in other safety categories can be fully refunded if no further infractions happen.

Any second fine in any safety category eliminates the refund and adds to the point total. Players approaching the suspension threshold will be required to meet with league officials and their coaching staff, and clubs with repeated violations will incur additional financial sanctions. The joint statement highlighted shared responsibility for player safety and the goal of reducing injury-causing techniques.
