NFL launches review of official's alleged profanity toward Cardinals tight end

The league said it will examine a sideline incident in which line judge Jeff Seeman appeared to use profanity toward Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during a game against the New York Giants.

In the closing moments of the Arizona Cardinals' defeat by the New York Giants, sideline footage showed line judge Jeff Seeman appearing to utter profanity at tight end Trey McBride while the player was leaving the field. The NFL confirmed it is reviewing the incident to determine if any disciplinary action is warranted. JC Tretter, executive director of the NFL Players Association, condemned the alleged conduct, emphasizing that officials should be held to the same behavioral standards as players.

Seeman, a veteran official who has worked in the league since 2002, was not immediately available for comment. The league’s rules already classify abusive, threatening, or insulting language toward officials as unsportsmanlike conduct, but it was unclear whether specific guidelines exist for officials themselves. The review underscores ongoing concerns about respect and professionalism on the field.

Why it matters

It addresses the league’s handling of official misconduct and reinforces standards of conduct for all participants.
