NFL owners convene to approve record $9.6 billion Seahawks sale to Vinod Khosla

NFL team owners are set to vote in Atlanta on selling the Seattle Seahawks to venture capitalist Vinod Khosla for just over $9.6 billion, a historic price for a franchise.

National Football League owners are gathering in Atlanta to cast votes on the planned purchase of the Seattle Seahawks by venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, his wife Neeru and possibly their son Neal. Valued at just over $9.6 billion, the transaction would set a new benchmark for NFL franchise valuations. Long-time beat writer Gregg Bell anticipates a unanimous approval and stresses that the team will remain in Seattle, contrasting the sale with the earlier relocation of the Seattle Supersonics.

Bell suggests the Khosla family may bring advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence to the organization, as well as consider modernizing Lumen Field, including adding permanent seats to the north end to push capacity past 70,000. Local restaurateur Justin "Juice" Andrews highlighted the economic boost the team provides to nearby businesses during playoff runs. After the owners’ vote, the NFL will spend about a week reviewing the payment before formally introducing the Khosla family as the new owners, likely around early September when the season opens.

Why it matters

The sale could reshape the Seahawks' operations, fan experience, and regional economy with record-breaking investment.
