NFL pushes for tighter rules on prediction market contracts and age limits
The NFL warned that certain prediction market contracts, such as bets on field goals, fumbles, injuries and officiating calls, are vulnerable to abuse and urged platforms to ban them and raise the minimum betting age to 21.
In a statement, the league identified contract types it believes could be manipulated by insiders with privileged team information, including wagers on specific game events and injuries. The NFL has asked prediction market operators to eliminate those contracts and align their user-age requirements with the 21-year threshold common in state sports-betting laws. It noted that neither the Commodity Futures Trading Commission nor the platforms have adopted such restrictions despite repeated requests. The platform Kalshi currently permits users as young as 18.
Why it matters
Ensuring fair prediction markets protects fans and prevents insider abuse of sports betting.
