NFL tells teams players returning to college cannot be signed this season

The NFL issued a reminder to all clubs that any athlete who resumes college football will be prohibited from signing with an NFL team for the remainder of the season. Players released from NFL contracts retain free-agent status and may join another NFL club or the CFL, but returning to the college ranks makes them ineligible for that season and for entry into the upcoming draft. Tight end Dae’Quan Wright, recently cleared on waivers after his release by the Cleveland Browns, and receiver Zxavian Harris, cut by the New Orleans Saints, both plan to play at LSU under coach Lane Kiffin.

Both received temporary restraining orders granting an extra year of college eligibility. Meanwhile, the SEC and Big Ten have adopted new rules that bar athletes who have signed professional contracts or attended pro camps from competing in conference play. Attorney Ryan Downton says the players are developing a legal response to the conference policies.
