NFL to let coaches name staff member for challenge flags beginning 2026

A rule amendment announced by the NFL will allow head coaches to appoint a sideline staff member to initiate replay challenges beginning with the 2026 season. The provision, codified in Rule 15, Section 1, Article 1(a), requires teams to inform officials ahead of each game about any designated challenger other than the head coach. The 2025 campaign recorded 151 challenges, the most frequent tally since 2019.

Under the new policy, coaches like Sean McVay and Mike Vrabel may delegate the red-flag throw to a trusted assistant. Analysts note that coaches such as Kyle Shanahan, Nick Sirianni and Vrabel have maintained challenge success rates above 50 percent, while others, including the Los Angeles Chargers and Jim Harbaugh’s squad, have struggled with lower conversion rates. The adjustment aims to give teams greater flexibility in managing critical replay situations.
