NFL warns Texans linebacker over pro-Palestinian eye-black message
The NFL told Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair he must remove a pro-Palestinian tribute from his eye black or face removal from the game.
Azeez Al-Shaair, a linebacker for the Houston Texans, opened the second-week matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals by writing the name of Wafaa Akila, a young Palestinian girl killed in an Israeli strike, on his eye black. He removed the text during the contest, but the NFL warned that any further display would result in him being barred from play. The league had previously fined Al-Shaair $11,492 for another Palestinian name, Hind Rajab, and earlier fined him $11,593 for a “Stop the Genocide” message.
The NFL’s equipment rules require prior league approval for any personal or political statements on player gear. Al-Shaair, who is Muslim, has been vocal about the Gaza conflict, saying he wants all lives to be valued. The incident follows other recent fines, such as 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa’s penalty for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat after a post-game interview.
