NGOs accuse Mexico's ruling party insiders of diverting cancer drug funds

Three NGOs filed complaints with Mexico's Attorney General alleging that Andres Lopez Beltran and associate Jorge Amilcar Olan stole federal money meant for pediatric cancer treatment, causing thousands of child deaths.

Three private organizations—Parents of Children with Cancer, De Corazon AC and Fundacion Nicoatole—took their accusations to Mexico's Attorney General's Office, charging Andres Lopez Beltran, the son of former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and his business partner Jorge Amilcar Olan with genocide, murder and organized crime. According to the NGOs, Olan's companies, backed by Lopez Beltran's political influence, secured illegal contracts and siphoned federal funds earmarked for pediatric oncology into phantom firms, leaving thousands of children without essential medicines.

The complaint cites a death toll exceeding 5,000 children who could not receive treatment. Despite the allegations, President Claudia Sheinbaum has defended Lopez Beltran and denied any investigation, even as U.S. officials have cancelled his tourist visa and opened a probe. Rival politicians allege that the scheme also involved proceeds from large-scale fuel smuggling. Olan has reportedly escaped Mexico and is now living in Europe, while Mexican authorities have not yet indicated whether they will act on the filings.

Why it matters

If true, the alleged theft deprived thousands of children of life-saving cancer drugs and implicates high-level political figures.
