NHS app adds push alerts for ready prescriptions across England
The NHS app will now send push notifications to phones and smartwatches when prescriptions are ready for collection, requiring users to enable alerts.
A new update to the NHS app will push alerts to users’ phones and smartwatches when their prescriptions are ready for pickup, aiming to cut down on needless phone calls and trips to the chemist. The service will roll out across almost 2,500 pharmacies in England, covering every Asda and Boots store, but users must activate push notifications in the app to receive them. Health Innovation Minister James Frith described the change as a practical use of digital technology that eases everyday NHS interactions and frees pharmacy staff to focus on patient support.
Rob Thompson, chief digital, data and technology officer at NHS England, said the alerts build on the popular prescription-tracking feature launched last year, which already serves millions. The Patients Association chief executive Rachel Power welcomed the addition, noting it responds to long-standing patient requests and complements other information channels.
Why it matters
It helps patients know exactly when medicines are ready, saving time and reducing pressure on pharmacy staff.
