Nick Offerman says Ron Swanson would eventually abandon libertarianism

Nick Offerman appeared on "Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso" and discussed his recent film Sovereign, where he played a self-styled sovereign citizen who dies in a police shootout. He said portraying that role gave him insight into those who feel targeted by misinformed groups, yet he dismissed the underlying libertarian worldview as unworkable, warning it would lead to chaos and a rule of the most armed. Offerman suggested that Ron Swanson, the libertarian figure he portrayed on Parks and Recreation, would eventually be persuaded to abandon those beliefs.

He recalled that series creator Mike Schur told him Swanson would have despised Donald Trump because the former loved capitalism, which Trump undermined by entering public service. Offerman added that he tries to treat Trump supporters with nuance, recognizing they are often bombarded with misinformation. Media analyst Bill D'Agostino described Swanson as a caricature of conservative excess that Offerman no longer wants to be associated with.
