Nicolai Tangen steers Norway's $1.7 trillion sovereign fund toward activist investing

Former hedge-fund founder Nicolai Tangen now heads Norway’s $1.7 trillion sovereign wealth fund and is leveraging its clout to push corporate reform.

A lavish 2020 gathering organized by Nicolai Tangen, then a candidate for the head of Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, ignited a media frenzy and a parliamentary inquiry over possible favoritism. Four years later Tangen runs Norges Bank Investment Management, overseeing assets worth $1.7 trillion—about 1.4 % of global market value—and has reshaped the fund’s image through a podcast that hosts leaders like Bill Gates and Elon Musk.

Although the fund’s mandate remains cautious, with a 70/30 equity-bond split requiring parliamentary approval, Tangen argues that its ethics council and proactive voting on climate and governance issues boost long-term profitability. Recent actions include opposing Exxon Mobil’s lawsuit against climate activists and voting against Musk’s controversial Tesla compensation plan, signaling a more assertive activist stance. Critics suggest the fund could further diversify into private equity and emerging markets such as India and Brazil, but Tangen maintains that responsible corporate behavior ultimately secures Norway’s social-service funding.
