Nidec uncovers 844 quality-control violations, CEO apologizes and vows reforms

Nidec Corp's investigation uncovered 844 cases of quality-control misconduct spanning the last ten years, including unapproved material substitutions, process alterations, fabricated test results and false labeling. The violations, some as early as 2012, were disclosed by CEO Mitsuya Kishida, who offered a deep bow and apologized to shareholders, group companies, customers and the public. He emphasized that no safety defects have been detected and large-scale recalls are unlikely.

The company said most infractions were driven by workers under intense pressure during rapid expansion. Senior Vice President Masayuki Minai announced plans to strengthen governance, compliance and a "speak up" culture. Following the announcement, Nidec's shares, which had fallen to about half their value five years ago, rose 5.7%.
