Nielsen introduces major upgrades to TV ratings methodology for 2026-27 season
Nielsen will roll out a series of enhancements to its TV ratings system starting Sept. 1, after approval from the Media Rating Council.
Beginning on Sept. 1, Nielsen will implement a suite of updates to its television audience measurement product for the 2026-27 season, following clearance by the Media Rating Council. The revisions replace a previously postponed change to the monthly Gauge metric, now integrating more current data from the Advertising Research Foundation’s DASH TV Universe Study, which had been delayed by up to 18 months. Additional improvements feature enhanced co-viewing detection through wearables, incorporation of Census Bureau surveys to better capture Hispanic and Spanish-language viewership, and a new integrated weighting system that aligns big-data with panel information while accounting for smart-TV opt-outs.
A machine-learning tool will also be upgraded to infer household demographics from big-data sources. Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao emphasized the aim of delivering the most precise measurement for media and advertising clients.
