Niger's junta leader appoints new army chief after thwarted mutiny

In the wake of a mutiny that saw fighting at key sites in Niamey, including the presidential office, the international airport and an adjacent military base, the ruling junta's leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, announced a reshuffle of senior military posts. Brigadier General Mamane Sani Kiaou, formerly chief of staff of the army's land component, was appointed chief of staff of the entire armed forces, succeeding General Moussa Salaou Barmou, whose removal was not detailed.

At the same time, General Abdourahmane Abou Zataka was named head of the land forces, taking over from Kiaou. Kiaou is described by acquaintances as an experienced field commander who has led anti-jihadist operations in Tillabéri and Diffa and negotiated the exit of French and U.S. forces after the 2023 coup. Official statements say Kiaou has toured major garrisons to restore cohesion among troops. The junta, which seized power in July 2023, continues to rely on Russian support and blames France for the attempted mutiny.
