Nigeria Football Federation chief steps down after both national teams miss key tournaments

Ibrahim Gusau, who has led the Nigeria Football Federation since 2022, announced his resignation on Thursday amid mounting criticism after the country's top football squads missed major tournaments. The men's side, the Super Eagles, were eliminated from World Cup contention after a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo, while the women's team, the Super Falcons, fell 2-1 to South Africa in an intercontinental playoff, ending a streak of qualifications dating back to 1991.

The federation also confirmed that its general secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, has resigned. In response to the setbacks, the organization had created a fact-finding committee to investigate the causes of the recent underperformance.
