Nine municipalities in three districts face maximum rural fire danger
The Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera has placed nine municipalities in Santarém, Portalegre and Faro districts under maximum rural fire risk.
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) announced that nine municipalities—Sardoal and Mação in Santarém, Gavião, Nisa, Portalegre, Castelo de Vide and Marvão in Portalegre, and Monchique and Portimão in Faro—are currently under maximum rural fire danger. In addition, roughly 70 municipalities in districts such as Bragança, Guarda, Viseu, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Leiria, Évora, Beja and others are flagged as very high risk.
IPMA calculates fire danger using recent air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the past 24 hours. The agency expects the heightened risk to continue in some areas through the end of next week. Forecasts for Friday predict mostly clear skies, generally light winds with stronger gusts in highlands and the western coast, and a modest rise in maximum temperatures, especially in the North and Centre.
