Nintendo's Switch 2 firmware adds docked VRR and new transfer features
A new 23.0.0 firmware update gives the Switch 2 variable refresh rate support while docked and introduces full system transfers between consoles.
The latest Switch 2 system update, version 23.0.0, finally implements variable refresh rate (VRR) for docked play, a feature long promised but absent at launch. VRR synchronises the display’s refresh rate with a game’s frame rate, reducing tearing and smoothing gameplay, matching capabilities of competing consoles. The patch also introduces a quick-settings toggle for handheld boost mode and expands the Mii editor to allow background music from classic Wii, 3DS, or Wii U titles. Moreover, Nintendo added a full system-transfer tool, letting owners move all data between Switch 2 units ahead of a Zelda-themed release scheduled for next month.
Why it matters
The update improves performance and data portability for Switch 2 owners, addressing a key missing feature and easing device upgrades.
