Nissan weighs third shift at Tennessee plant to boost 2027 Rogue hybrid output
Nissan Motor is evaluating a third production shift at its Smyrna, Tennessee factory as it prepares to launch the 2027 Rogue with a new e-Power hybrid, aiming to raise U.S. output toward 1 million units.
Nissan Motor is contemplating a third manufacturing shift at its 6-million-square-foot Smyrna, Tennessee assembly plant to accommodate the 2027 Rogue launch, which includes a new e-Power hybrid model. Chairman Christian Meunier said the company is already operating at full capacity and expects the additional shift to be implemented quickly once the hybrid arrives. Adding a third shift to both the Tennessee and the Canton, Mississippi plants could raise Nissan's U.S. annual output to about 1 million vehicles, up from nearly 487,000 in 2025.
The e-Power system uses a gasoline engine to generate electricity for the drive motors, eliminating the need for external charging. U.S. production of the hybrid is slated to begin next year, with interim imports from Japan. Nissan aims to source 80% of its U.S. sales locally by 2030 and sees the Rogue hybrid as a key competitor to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V in the compact crossover segment.
