NMDC sets 2047 net-zero goal with 90% cut in operational emissions
State-owned iron ore miner NMDC Ltd announced a plan to reach net-zero operational emissions by 2047, targeting at least a 90% reduction.
NMDC Ltd, the government-run iron ore producer, has pledged to achieve net-zero operational emissions by 2047, encompassing direct fuel use and electricity consumption. Its strategy calls for a minimum 90% cut in emissions, with any residual output to be offset. Six core actions—boosting energy efficiency, integrating renewable sources, electrifying its vehicle fleet, adopting low-carbon fuels, deploying carbon capture, utilisation and storage, and managing demand—will drive the transition.
The plan is divided into short-term (FY26-FY30), medium-term (FY30-FY40) and long-term (FY40-FY47) phases, beginning with efficiency measures and renewable installations such as a 10.5 MW wind farm at Chitradurga and solar projects. Subsequent phases will introduce deeper decarbonisation and new technologies. Logistics will also be greened via a slurry pipeline and doubled rail capacity to shift more ore transport to rail, reducing carbon intensity.
Why it matters
The target marks a major step for India's mining sector toward climate goals and could set a benchmark for heavy-industry decarbonisation.
