No firm completion date set for Ireland's €2.2bn National Children’s Hospital

The National Paediatric Hospital Development Board said there is currently no agreed date for the new National Children’s Hospital to open, pending BAM’s remediation of quality and compliance concerns. Over the summer, the board asked BAM for an updated schedule, but the build has already missed 19 milestones and costs have risen to roughly €2.2bn. BAM’s Irish executive director, Alasdair Henderson, will leave the role within months, with John Wilkinson assuming interim leadership of the Irish business.

An independent Employer’s Representative is demanding a revised programme that details defect remediation and a new substantial completion date. While BAM reports that most rooms meet contract standards, about 2,000 defects remain, and certification of prefabricated bathroom pods is still under review. Both parties maintain that the project remains a priority and aim to finish as quickly as possible.
