No need to wait to implement Regeni ruling say parents

Giulio Regeni's parents said via their lawyer on Thursday that there is no need to wait to seek to implement Monday's ruling by a Rome court convicting three Egyptian officials of abducting their son, a student who was brutally murdered in Cairo in January-February 2016. Premier Giorgia Meloni's government has said it will address the issue when the appeals process is exhausted if the verdict, in which the officials were given 10-year terms, becomes definitive.

""As is evident from a simple reading of Article 540 of the Code of Criminal Procedure as well as from the operative part of the judgement itself, the provisional awarding of 150,000 euros (in damages) to the premier's office - which joined the proceedings as a civil plaintiff —is immediately enforceable," lawyer Alessandra Ballerini said for the Regeni family. "So, there is no need to wait for the verdict to become definitive". (see related Regeni story).
