No piranhas captured in two-day alien fish mitigation effort at Klau Dam

During a two-day Alien Fish Mitigation Programme at Klau Dam, Raub, officials reported that no piranha fish were found or caught.

Fisheries Director-General Datuk Adnan Hussain announced that the recent Alien Fish Mitigation Programme at Klau Dam, Raub, yielded no piranha catches during its two-day run. While this absence does not confirm the species' eradication, the programme incorporated both traditional netting methods and environmental DNA (eDNA) testing to monitor potential presence. Around 150 volunteers participated, employing angling, cast nets and gill nets across the roughly 25-square-kilometre reservoir.

The effort recorded a total of 156.6 kilograms of alien fish, primarily Peacock Bass, Zebra Tilapia and Javanese Carp. The Department emphasized continued surveillance and public education to safeguard native aquatic biodiversity. Results from the eDNA analysis will be released after scientific evaluation.
