The upcoming week marks the start of the Nobel announcements, beginning with the physiology or medicine prize on Monday and ending with the economics prize on Oct. 12. Each of the six awards now carries a cash component of 12 million Swedish crowns. The prizes cover physics, chemistry, literature, peace, medicine and economics, the latter added in 1968 by Sweden's central bank in memory of Alfred Nobel.
Ceremonies will be held in Stockholm's Concert Hall for the Swedish awards, while the peace prize will be presented in Oslo by the Norwegian Nobel Committee chair. The events culminate with a banquet for about 1,300 guests at Stockholm City Hall, featuring a secret Nordic-themed menu prepared by top Swedish chefs.
