Nokia to cut over 200 positions in Finland amid cost-saving drive

Nokia announced it will eliminate 253 jobs across Espoo, Tampere and Oulu, citing a need to stay competitive and invest in growth areas.

Nokia disclosed plans to reduce its Finnish workforce by 253 positions, affecting sites in Espoo, Tampere and Oulu. The company framed the reductions as essential for maintaining market competitiveness and enabling investment in strategic sectors such as defence, AI and data-center services. Employee talks are scheduled to start on 12 October, with the firm pledging responsible handling of the process and support for affected staff.

Mikko Hautala, Nokia’s Finland head, communicated the decision via email, stressing that while the measures are hard, they are required in a rapidly changing environment. The move follows a cost-saving programme launched in 2023 aimed at trimming operating expenses.

Why it matters

The layoffs signal a shift in Nokia’s focus toward high-growth tech areas and may affect thousands of Finnish workers.
