Nomination window opens for Hong Kong's 1,500-member Election Committee

The nomination period for the 982 seats on Hong Kong's 1,500-member Election Committee has begun and will close on October 20.

The Election Committee's nomination phase opened on Wednesday, allowing candidates to vie for 982 of the 1,500 seats that will choose Hong Kong's chief executive and a substantial share of Legislative Council members. The window remains open until October 20, after which any surplus of approved nominees will trigger a poll on November 22, as outlined by the Electoral Affairs Commission. The body is divided into five sectors covering industry, commerce, finance, lawmakers, district organisations, and Beijing-linked entities, together accounting for 40 percent of the seats.

Its five-year term runs from February 1 of the coming year to January 31, 2032, and it also nominates candidates for the top offices. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Registration and Electoral Office website or collected at district offices and the Office of the Returning Officers. The election is projected to cost around HK$260 million, covering staff, publicity, venues and logistics.
