Non-binary Green MSP Manivannan loses St Andrews rector race amid controversy
Green MSP Manivannan, who faced criticism for remarks on rape, finished third in the St Andrews rector election, which was won by Arthur Bernhoff.
Manivannan, a non-binary Green MSP from India, was a candidate for the rector position at the University of St Andrews but came third out of six contenders. Their candidacy was marred by renewed scrutiny of comments describing rape as existing on a "spectrum" and criticizing its demonisation, which drew condemnation from the Scottish Rape Crisis Alliance and former rector John Cleese. Actor Brian Baumgartner finished second, while Arthur Bernhoff, a local graduate employed by the Ministry of Defence and a civilian expert for the Foreign Office, won the election.
The university reported the highest voter participation in recent history, with turnout just under 45%, almost twice that of the 2023 election. Manivannan, who recently obtained a graduate visa after being elected to the Scottish Parliament on a student visa, apologized for the remarks, stating they were taken out of context and reaffirmed support for survivors.
Why it matters
The outcome highlights how controversial statements on sexual violence can influence university elections and public perception of politicians.
