Non-league goalkeeper chosen as successor to Uganda's Tooro throne
London-based goalkeeper George Desmond Kamurasi has been selected by a royal committee to become the next king of Uganda's Tooro kingdom after his cousin's death.
The Tooro kingdom in western Uganda faces a new monarch after King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV died unexpectedly while receiving treatment for an aggressive cancer in the United States. A royal committee selected George Desmond Kamurasi, the captain and goalkeeper of SE Dons in England's ninth-tier league, as the heir, with 15 of 18 members supporting his appointment. Kamurasi, a British citizen with a wife and son, is the grandson of former monarch King George Rukidi III, as his father was the king's second son.
He has indicated hesitation about abandoning his life in London, where his team also has a scheduled FA Vase qualifier match. The funeral for King Oyo, who became king at three years old, is planned for this weekend, and his body has been returned to Uganda.
