Non-smoker diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer opts for robotic lobectomy

Allison Ciaccio experienced a lingering respiratory illness that led doctors to order imaging, which uncovered a highly suspicious lung lesion. A PET scan and biopsy identified stage I lung cancer, a surprising diagnosis for someone who has never smoked. She consulted thoracic surgeon Robert Cerfolio, who recommended a robotic left-upper lobectomy, a technique that uses tiny instruments through small incisions to remove the affected lung tissue and lymph nodes.

The operation proceeded without complications, and Ciaccio left the hospital the following morning, having avoided the need for chemotherapy or radiation. Follow-up visits over eight months show steady recovery, and she is now enjoying life with her daughter, newborn grandchild, and plans to take up pickleball. Her case highlights the importance of early detection and the benefits of minimally invasive robotic surgery for lung cancer patients.
