Norbert Weakens While New Tropical Depression Fifteen-E Forms in Pacific
Tropical Storm Norbert is expected to become a post-tropical low by Tuesday and dissipate by Wednesday, as Tropical Depression Fifteen-E develops nearby.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say Tropical Storm Norbert, currently situated about 1,655 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California and 1,290 miles east of Hilo, will weaken to a post-tropical remnant low by Tuesday and vanish by Wednesday. Norbert now carries maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and is tracking west-northwest at 14 mph. Meanwhile, the agency identified Tropical Depression Fifteen-E about 680 miles southwest of Baja California's southern tip, moving westward at roughly 10 mph with winds of 35 mph.
The depression is projected to strengthen into a tropical storm, expected to be named Odalys, by early Monday. Computer models and one outlet Forecast Center warn that both systems will face a hostile environment of dry air, likely preventing them from reaching Hawaii. All reliable models indicate the new storm will dissipate before approaching the islands.
