Nordea shares tumble across Nordic markets after pause on buybacks
Nordea's stock fell sharply on three Nordic exchanges following the bank's announcement that it will suspend its share repurchase programme.
Nordea posted third-quarter earnings that matched market forecasts, with operating profit and net interest income near the predicted levels. Despite the solid performance, the bank announced it would suspend its share-repurchase programme until the European Central Bank clarifies its capital-model review, a process that may not be resolved until 2027. The announcement triggered a sharp sell-off, with the stock dropping noticeably on the Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen exchanges.
The buyback pause was identified as the main driver of the price decline. The bank also noted a drop in net result from fair-value items and a slight reduction in net interest margin, while corporate lending and deposits continued to grow.
Why it matters
The share-price drop highlights investor sensitivity to capital-return policies and regulatory uncertainty for major Nordic banks.
