Norrland Party Emerges as Leading Force in Västernorrland Regional Election

The newly formed Norrland Party secured the top position in Kramfors municipality and is poised to dominate the regional council in Västernorrland.

The Norrland Party, created in the previous year, ran on promises of increased self-governance, a more equitable allocation of resources, and a society where northern Swedes enjoy the same prospects as those elsewhere in the country. In regional policy, it advocates for three acute hospitals located in Härnösand, Kramfors and Ånge, alongside expanded healthcare services. Elina Arab, who previously chaired the regional health and care board for the Social Democrats, leads the party, while Robert Thunfors, once an opposition councilor for the Health Party, heads its regional election list.

Both politicians exited their former parties after their relationship became public in the autumn of 2024. Despite the controversy, the Norrland Party became the largest party in Kramfors and expects to win seats across all seven municipalities in the region, claiming to write political history in Västernorrland and the broader north.

Why it matters

The party's rise could reshape regional politics and healthcare policy in northern Sweden.
