Following a US House ethics committee finding that Rep. Chuck Edwards fostered a hostile environment and likely engaged in sexual harassment toward two female staff members, North Carolina Republicans met in Asheville to choose a replacement candidate. State lawmaker Jennifer Balkcom defeated five other contenders on the first round of voting and secured the GOP nomination for the 11th congressional district. She will face Democratic nominee Jamie Ager in the upcoming November midterm election.
Edwards had been the party’s nominee after beating Madison Cawthorn in the 2022 primary, but withdrew after the investigation recommended censure. Although Donald Trump carried the district by ten points two years ago, Democrats see an opening given the president’s declining approval ratings and dissatisfaction with the pace of recovery from Hurricane Helene.
