North Dakota State Bison set to debut in FBS after historic lower-division success
North Dakota State will launch its first Football Bowl Subdivision season at home against Jacksonville State, capping a run that produced ten lower-division national titles.
After two decades in the Championship Subdivision and ten national championships, North Dakota State is stepping up to the Football Bowl Subdivision, beginning with a home game against Jacksonville State. A narrow playoff loss to Illinois State last season convinced one outlet director Matt Larsen that the program needed a new challenge. The Bison will make their Mountain West debut at Air Force on Sept. 12 and join other newcomers like Sacramento State.
Funding the jump required a $5 million NCAA reclassification payment and a $12.5 million Mountain West entry fee, both covered by private donors, and the team added 22 scholarships, roughly doubling its operating budget. Alumni such as Seattle Seahawks guard Grey Zabel praised the university’s facilities, staff and fan base as key assets. Coach Tim Polasek and players like linebacker Donovan Woolen expressed confidence that the Bison are ready to compete at the higher level, while future rivalries may develop with regional schools such as Northern Illinois and Wyoming.
Why it matters
The move reshapes conference alignments and highlights a program rising from lower tiers to top-level college football.
