North Korea appoints Kim Song Gi as new defense minister in leadership reshuffle

Kim Jong Un oversaw a defence ministry swap, installing Kim Song Gi and moving No Kwang Chol to a senior party role.

During a meeting chaired by Kim Jong Un, state media reported that Kim Song Gi, head of the Korean People's Army General Political Bureau, will become minister of National Defense, replacing No Kwang Chol. The former minister has been reassigned as first vice-director of the Workers' Party's Munitions Industry Department. The personnel change was presented as part of a broader organisational restructuring, and officials gave no comment on nuclear or missile issues.

Why it matters

The change could affect North Korea's military strategy and internal power dynamics.
