North Korea claims successful test of upgraded tactical ballistic missile
North Korean state media said a tactical ballistic missile was test-fired on Oct. 12, describing the upgrade as a major success.
North Korea announced on Oct. 12 that it had test-fired a tactical ballistic missile to confirm a technical upgrade of an important core element, calling the outcome a "big success" for its offensive arsenal. The Korean Central News Agency said the test was part of routine activities, but provided no further technical details. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff detected several ballistic missiles launched from the Pyongyang region the previous day, with one traveling more than 900 km, and are analyzing the missiles' specifications alongside U.S. partners.
Japan's defense ministry reported at least two missiles, one covering about 220 km and another exceeding 910 km, while U.S. Pacific Command confirmed two ballistic missiles were launched. The launches mark North Korea's 16th missile test of the year, occurring shortly after Seoul demonstrated a homegrown hypersonic glide vehicle and after a land-mine explosion in the DMZ injured three South Korean soldiers.
Why it matters
The test signals North Korea's continued advancement of missile capabilities, raising regional security concerns.
