North Korea gains Russian jamming gear and Ukraine combat lessons, experts warn

Experts say Russia has supplied North Korea with electronic-warfare jammers and that participation in the Ukraine war has taught Pyongyang how to move forces over long distances, raising security concerns.

During a Center for Strategic and International Studies event, Gen. Xavier Brunson warned that Russia has provided North Korea with electronic-warfare jammers it previously lacked, and that involvement in the Ukraine conflict has given Pyongyang practical experience in long-range troop and logistics movements. Shin Jong-woo of the Korea Defense and Security Forum noted that North Korean forces have faced drone attacks in Ukraine and could incorporate those lessons into new doctrines, while also suggesting Russia could supply more advanced EW systems capable of disrupting communications and GPS-guided weapons.

Retired Lt. Gen. Chun In-bum emphasized that the combination of new technology and battlefield experience could amplify North Korea’s overall threat, but cautioned that combat exposure alone does not instantly create a modern army. A military official said the true effect of these lessons can only be judged by observing changes in North Korean tactics over time, and verification of the jammers remains pending.

Why it matters

Russian EW tools and Ukraine combat know-how could make North Korea’s military more capable and unpredictable.
