North Korea says trimmed US-South Korea drill won’t ease its hostility

North Korea’s Kim Yo Jong dismissed the reduction of the US-South Korean joint exercise as insufficient to change Pyongyang’s view of the allies as hostile.

In a statement released by the Korean Central News Agency, Kim Yo Jong asserted that the decision to curtail the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise will not modify North Korea’s assessment of the United States and South Korea as hostile forces. The drill, originally set for eleven days, was reduced to five after President Donald Trump labeled it “inappropriate and hostile.” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the schedule adjustment, which runs through August 27.

While Trump claimed that Kim Jong Un had responded positively to his invitation for dialogue, Kim Yo Jong said she was unaware of any such exchange and described it as the only foreign-policy matter she had not been informed about. She reiterated that the relationship between her brother and Trump remains “excellent” and that the North Korean leadership continues to view the exercise as a threat that pushes the peninsula toward war. Pyongyang vowed to maintain its right to self-defence and to neutralise what it calls the allies’ military threat until they abandon plans to dominate the region.

Why it matters

The story shows ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula despite diplomatic overtures, affecting regional security.

How this story developed

  1. Aug 14 Trump directs Pentagon to cut back joint drills with South Korea
  2. Aug 16 Trump announced a partial reduction of the drills after Seoul declined to assist on Iran denuclearisation.
  3. Aug 17 President Donald Trump ordered Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to substantially reduce U.S. participation in the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises.
  4. Aug 18 Donald Trump posted on Truth Social claiming election fraud, citing India’s election ID rules and urging passage of the SAVE AMERICA ACT.
  5. Aug 18 The Ulchi Freedom Shield, an 11-day tabletop and field exercise involving about 18,000 South Korean troops, was slated to test responses to regional threats. Trump’s directive, citing good ties with Kim Jong Un and South Korea’s stance on Iran, left the scope of the cuts unclear. Experts warn that trimming costly field maneuvers could erode joint operational familiarity and delay a planned shift to South Korean wartime command. North Korea has already condemned the drills as provocative, threatening a stronger deterrent. Senior US and South Korean officials are meeting to discuss how to adjust the schedule.
  6. Aug 18 U.S. and South Korean forces launched the ten‑day exercise on Monday, though the scope was trimmed.
  7. Aug 18 Trump announced a substantial scaling back of U.S. participation in the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills.
  8. Aug 19 South Korean foreign minister said the drill reduction appears intended to pressure Seoul on Iran and a U.S. investment agreement.
