North Korea to restart border loudspeaker propaganda this month, says Kim Yo-jong

Kim Yo-jong announced that North Korea will resume loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts toward South Korea later this month.

North Korean leader’s sister Kim Yo-jong declared that Pyongyang will reactivate loudspeaker propaganda aimed at the Republic of Korea within October, covering the whole inter-Korean border. In a statement released by KCNA, she called the action a “most just measure” and an appropriate reply to perceived threats. Earlier in the day she toured key border sites with Pak Jong-chon, an adviser to the North’s Ministry of National Defense, to assess progress on a project to strengthen the frontier.

The announcement corrects an earlier report about the timing of the inspection and reiterates the leader’s order to make the border “eternally impregnable.” The decision comes amid heightened tensions after recent DMZ land-mine blasts that wounded three South Korean troops, which Seoul blames on North Korean mines, a claim Pyongyang denies.

Why it matters

Resuming loudspeaker propaganda heightens tensions on the Korean peninsula and signals a new escalation in inter-Korean hostilities.
