North Korean auxiliary vessel sinks in international waters near South Korea, one crew missing
An auxiliary craft from a North Korean merchant ship sank about 200 km off Pohang, leaving one crew member unaccounted for while three were rescued by Japan’s coast guard.
On Thursday, an auxiliary ship belonging to a North Korean merchant vessel capsized and sank in international waters approximately 200 kilometres off the southeastern coast of Pohang, South Korea. The incident was first reported to the East Regional Coast Guard Headquarters by the South Korean Navy around 10:50 a.m. All four crew members initially went missing, but the Japan Coast Guard succeeded in rescuing three of them.
The remaining crew member is still unaccounted for, prompting the Korea Coast Guard to launch a joint search-and-rescue operation based on international maritime obligations and humanitarian principles. No further casualties have been reported.
