North Korean intelligence says Kim Jong-un is severely obese but appears healthy, daughter gains prominence
The National Intelligence Service reported that Kim Jong-un weighs around 140 kg and faces high cardiovascular risk, yet shows no obvious health problems, while his daughter Kim Ju-ae is taking on a more visible role in state affairs.
North Korea's National Intelligence Service briefed members of the National Assembly, stating that leader Kim Jong-un's weight is in the 140-kilogram range, which raises his likelihood of cardiovascular disease, yet he has exhibited no clear signs of ill health, even running up stairs during a destroyer inspection. The agency also evaluated his daughter, Kim Ju-ae, as standing about 160 centimeters tall and weighing more than 50 kilograms.
It highlighted her growing prominence, citing her central role during the New Year’s Day visit to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun and her inaugural appearances at Victory Day commemorations and one outlet Day memorials. Previously focused on military duties, Ju-ae now participates in political, diplomatic and public-welfare events, reaching a record 30 public engagements this year. The NIS view suggests the regime is preparing her as a potential successor while monitoring the leader's health risks.
Why it matters
It reveals the regime's assessment of Kim Jong-un's health and signals Kim Ju-ae's rising political stature.
