North Sea Apache workers threaten strike that could cripple UK fuel flow

Unite says Apache offshore staff may walk out later this month, risking severe disruption to the Forties pipeline that supplies about a third of the UK's oil and gas.

The Unite union warned that Apache's offshore workforce in the North Sea may commence strike action later this month after pay talks stalled. Workers rejected a 4% increase, labeling it an unacceptable cut amid the company's record profits, and voted overwhelmingly for industrial action. If a strike occurs, it could affect the Forties and Beryl oilfields and possibly force the Charlie platform offline, threatening the Forties pipeline that handles nearly a third of the United Kingdom's oil and gas.

Apache maintains its proposal is reasonable, cites a robust rewards package, and says experienced staff will remain on critical sites to limit any impact. The company also noted that any reduction in pipeline pressure would be comparable to routine maintenance outages. Unite highlighted the broader risk to consumers already facing high fuel prices and recent diesel price spikes.

Why it matters

A strike could cut a major portion of the UK's oil supply, raising fuel prices and threatening energy security.
