Northam Platinum seeks buyer after unsolicited offer from local competitor
South Africa's fourth-largest PGM miner, Northam Platinum, has put itself up for sale following an unexpected approach from a domestic rival.
Northam Platinum, the fourth-largest producer of platinum-group metals in South Africa, has entered the market for a potential buyer after an unexpected approach from a local competitor. The firm has not revealed who made the overture. According to the mining outlet Miningmx, the two biggest rivals, Sibanye-Stillwater and Impala Platinum, have ruled themselves out of the process.
This narrows the field to Valterra Platinum, a company demerged from Anglo American in the previous year, which is now seen as the most likely suitor. Valterra declined to provide a statement when asked. If the transaction proceeds, it could reshape the South African PGM sector and give the remaining majors greater leverage with car manufacturers in Europe and Asia that rely on these metals for catalytic converters and AI-related data storage hardware.
Why it matters
A sale could reshape South Africa's dominant platinum market and affect global auto-industry supply chains.
