Northern Territory unveils plan for privately built 1,200-bed men's prison
The NT government announced a new 1,200-bed men's prison to be built, financed and run by a private firm, alongside a 200-bed women's facility managed by Corrections.
The Northern Territory will contract a private company to design, fund and operate a large male prison with 1,200 places, while a separate 200-bed women's centre will remain under the Department of Corrections. The territory's treasury will start a formal expression-of-interest process, targeting a selection of the operator by the end of 2027. This marks the first major private-sector prison project in the region.
Why it matters
It introduces private-sector management to the NT's prison system, potentially reshaping correctional funding and operations.
