Northrop Grumman deploys robotic spacecraft to extend Optus satellite's service life

Northrop Grumman’s Mission Extension Vehicle detached from Optus’s communications satellite to clear the way for a new robotic servicing fleet.

After over a year of holding Optus’s 2009 communications satellite in its proper orbit, Northrop Grumman’s Mission Extension Vehicle disengaged to make room for its next-generation service fleet. Four new Northrop spacecraft, launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, consist of a DARPA-developed Mission Robotic Vehicle equipped with two robotic arms and three smaller Mission Extension Pods that serve as modular propulsion units.

The MRV is scheduled for 2027 to attach an MEP to Optus, which could extend the satellite’s operational life by about six years beyond its original 15-year design. Cassie Wong, Northrop’s director of logistics and servicing, says the effort marks a paradigm shift toward sustainable, repair-capable space infrastructure. Existing MEVs, launched in 2019 and 2020, have already provided life extension for three customers, while the MRV is built for in-orbit refueling and future upgrades, potentially serving defense customers and low-Earth-orbit assets. Parallel initiatives, such as Katalyst Space’s plan to repair a NASA telescope, highlight growing interest in on-orbit servicing.
