Norway assures sufficient gas supply for Europe despite low storage levels
Norway's gas pipeline operator Gassco said it can meet Europe's heightened winter demand even though continental gas stocks are well below average.
Gassco, which runs Norway's gas pipelines and processing facilities, confirmed on Thursday that the system is running smoothly and can handle the surge in winter demand across Europe. Maintenance work has been completed, and the Norwegian continental shelf can supply about a third of the EU and Britain's gas needs, a role it assumed after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. In 2025 the operator moved 114.9 billion cubic metres of gas, and 2026 deliveries already total 70-80 billion cubic metres, surpassing the same period last year.
European gas inventories remain far below long-term averages and prices have more than doubled to around 73 €/MWh. The price spike follows supply constraints from the US-Israel conflict against Iran and a warning from the EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen about an impending energy-price crisis.
Why it matters
Europe relies on Norway for a large share of its gas, crucial for winter energy security amid low storage and high prices.
