Norway’s Coast Guard intercepted the Russian-owned cruise ship Professor Molchanov near the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard after a day-long standoff, citing a compensation claim by Ukrainian energy firm Naftogaz. The claim, amounting to $4.22 billion with accrued interest and legal fees, originates from a 2023 Hague arbitration that ordered Russia to reimburse Naftogaz for assets expropriated in Crimea. Moscow has not complied, prompting the Norwegian action, which Russian Foreign Ministry spokespeople labeled as piracy.
Alexei Chekunkov, Russia’s minister for the Far East and Arctic, warned of a legal challenge, while Naftogaz’s acting CEO Sergii Fedorenko pledged to pursue Russian holdings globally until payment is made. The U.S. law firm Covington, representing Naftogaz, had been monitoring the vessel, which was conducting commercial expedition cruises to Svalbard. Norwegian authorities are now responsible for the passengers aboard the ship.
